The Oeste Portugal region is a unique cultural region composed by 12 municipalities each promoting sustainable development and quality of life. The clean beaches have an “Excellent” status regarding the EU bathing water directive and about 16 beaches are accessible to people with disabilities. 87% of the Oeste Region is non-buildable and a large part of the territory is a protected natural area. The region also has the greatest underwater reef of Europe; the reef of Nazaré. Plus, the region possesses a distinctive cultural heritage through  many museums and well-restored historical buildings including the UNESCO World Heritage site “Monastery of Alcobaça”.

Portugal participated in the 2019 Sustainable Top 100 Destination Awards at ITB Berlin by submitting a sustainable tourism story.
